Steering Group Dresden Region 04.09.2025
1st meeting on the objectives and content of a Dresden Region municipal association
On September 4, 2025, the steering group for the project on intensifying (intermunicipal) cooperation for the development of the Dresden region as a European semiconductor location held its first meeting.
In addition to the 21 cities and municipalities in the Dresden region, the steering group includes the districts of Bautzen, Meissen, Central Saxony, and Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains. In addition, there are representatives from the regional planning associations of Upper Lusatia-Lower Silesia and Upper Elbe Valley/Eastern Ore Mountains.
The main topic of discussion was the planned content and activities of a future Dresden Region Municipal Association. The discussion was based, among other things, on the results of a survey of 96 cities and municipalities in the region conducted in August 2025. Most of the survey participants expressed a general interest in participating in a potential Dresden Region Municipal Association. Areas of action highlighted as highly relevant included mobility with public transport and private transport, population development, and medical care and nursing.
No decision on specific topics and areas of action was made at the meeting. However, it was noted that the topics addressed by the municipal association will contribute to achieving greater visibility and impact, as many of the challenges in the future cannot be tackled by individual actors alone. Above all, the importance of continuous coordination and short-term successes was emphasized.
The participants agreed that the state capital of Dresden, on behalf of the Dresden adventure region, would submit a project application for a project entitled “Kommunalverbund Region Dresden” (Dresden Region Municipal Association) to the Upper Elbe Valley/Eastern Ore Mountains Regional Planning Association by September 19, 2025.
